Xabi Alonso Urges Chelsea to Target Liverpool Star Wirtz

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has instructed club executives to monitor the situation of Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz should the Merseyside club decide to sell him, as reported by TEAMtalk.

Alonso Eyes Reunion With Wirtz

Wirtz previously played under Alonso at German club Bayer Leverkusen, where the pair secured the Bundesliga title in 2024. Following Alonso’s appointment as Chelsea manager in the summer of 2026, the Spanish tactician has reportedly advised the Stamford Bridge hierarchy to enter the conversation if the Germany international becomes available in the summer of 2027.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder transferred to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 for a fee of £116 million. Across his career with the Reds so far, Wirtz has recorded eight goals and 13 assists in 59 appearances across all competitions.

Although his performances at Anfield have largely been described as underwhelming, Alonso remains eager to bring the playmaker to west London if the opportunity arises. Liverpool are not actively seeking to sell Wirtz and maintain confidence that the player will ultimately find his best form, with his current contract running until the summer of 2030.

Praise From Germany Teammate Philipp Treu

Despite facing criticism from pundits such as former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher, Wirtz continues to attract high praise from his peers. Freiburg right-shirt and Germany teammate Philipp Treu expressed great admiration for the midfielder when speaking to Bild.

When asked which players he would like to share a pitch with at club level, Treu said, “Standing on the pitch with Kimmich for the first time with the national team was definitely special. Of course, superstars like Lamine Yamal, Lionel Messi, or Cristiano Ronaldo would also be exciting. But I have to say, standing on the training pitch with Florian Wirtz for the first time and seeing what he’s capable of was impressive.”

Detailing what makes Wirtz exceptional, Treu explained, “When he gets going, it sometimes looks as though he’s playing against an U19 side. He comes up with solutions that make you wonder: how does he do that? During a ball-retention drill, I once thought he wouldn’t lose the ball at all and was making every decision correctly. His technique in tight spaces is exceptional.”

Chelsea will continue to observe developments surrounding the midfielder’s status at Anfield while evaluating their squad options for future transfer windows.
