Ipswich Town Women on ‘inevitable’ path to WSL – Boswell

Ipswich Town Women are on an inevitable trajectory to earn promotion to the Women’s Super League, according to club captain Maria Boswell.

Climbing the Ranks

The Tractor Girls finished in ninth place in WSL2 last season after achieving promotion to the second tier in 2025. The team was competing in the fourth tier as recently as 2021. Under the guidance of former men’s team player David Wright, who took charge in April, the Blues currently sit in third place after five matches of the 2026-27 campaign.

Speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk, the 23-year-old Boswell stated, “I don’t think there’s any ceiling to what we can go on and achieve. For me, I just see it [promotion to the WSL] as inevitable.” She added that the club naturally belongs in the top tier due to the owners’ intent and the investment received.

Boswell joined the Ipswich academy in 2019 and was appointed club captain at just 20 years old in 2023.

Strong Start to the Season

Ipswich opened the current season with draws against Nottingham Forest and Southampton. They followed those results up by securing consecutive league victories against Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Sheffield United.

Reflecting on the squad’s outlook, Boswell noted that the arrival of high-caliber players led them to believe during pre-season that they should strive for promotion. However, she emphasized the importance of maintaining focus during training sessions and delivering performances on matchdays to earn three points.

Ipswich Town Women will host second-placed Sunderland at the Colchester Community Stadium on Sunday.
