Manchester United have reportedly initiated talks with Antonio Conte regarding a potential move to replace Michael Carrick at Old Trafford. The development follows a difficult 4-1 defeat against Serie A club Como, which has increased pressure on Carrick’s position.
Managerial Uncertainty and Alternative Candidates
According to reports, INEOS chief and club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe supports Jason Wilcox if a decision is made to dismiss Carrick. Although an immediate managerial change is not currently planned by the club, discussions are underway to identify potential successors.
Alongside Conte, names such as Unai Emery, Fabian Hurzeler, Eddie Howe, and Julian Nagelsmann have been linked with the post. However, talkSPORT reported that Hurzeler has no intention of leaving Brighton to take over at Old Trafford should the position become vacant.
Antonio Conte’s Demands for the Job
Italian newspaper La Repubblica revealed that discussions with Conte took place on Wednesday evening, with the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager showing openness to a return to the Premier League. However, the Italian coach has outlined two specific conditions to accept the terms.
Conte is reportedly asking for complete control over the transfer market and the authority to select his own backroom staff. He aims to influence squad construction and bring trusted collaborators to assist him.
The club’s leadership is set to evaluate these requirements in the coming hours to decide whether the discussions will progress into a concrete negotiation, though no final agreement has been reached yet.
Differing Reports From England
While reports emerge from Italy regarding the dialogue, The Daily Telegraph states that Manchester United are not yet fully convinced by Conte. Sources indicate that the Italian does not currently feature prominently in the club’s plans because he may not align with the specific operational structure leadership is determined to implement.
Club representatives have previously lobbied for Conte, but evaluations regarding his fit within the organization remain ongoing.
