How Josh Acheampong is giving Chelsea a major decision

Chelsea’s renowned academy has consistently produced top-tier England defenders over the years, and 20-year-old Josh Acheampong is emerging as the latest talent ready to make that step.

Since John Terry’s breakthrough in the early 2000s, the club has developed international centre-backs including Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Guehi, Fikayo Tomori, Andreas Christensen, and Nathan Ake.

Acheampong’s Rise Under Xabi Alonso

Acheampong has started six of Chelsea’s past nine matches across all competitions under new manager Xabi Alonso. Only four players—attackers Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers alongside defenders Colwill and Maxence Lacroix—have played more than his 581 minutes during this tenure, aided by Alonso settling on a more consistent lineup.

Chelsea conceded a league-high 12 goals before the international break but have let in only one since, keeping their first clean sheet of the season away at Everton.

Acheampong has played as a roaming centre-back in a back three alongside Colwill and Lacroix, stepping into midfield or moving wide to perform traditional full-back duties in possession.

He has also forged a promising partnership with right wing-back Pedro Neto, contributing to the buildup for Joao Pedro’s goal against Bournemouth while keeping £75m signing Wesley Fofana out of the side.

Alonso has emphasized that the defensive turnaround is a collective effort, helped by the return of injured midfielder Moises Caicedo and his partnership with 36-year-old Jordan Henderson.

During pre-season tours, Alonso made it clear he would award minutes based on merit rather than reputation.

This environment has allowed Acheampong to feature regularly while also starting eight of England Under-21s’ past 10 matches, putting him in contention for a senior international call-up if manager Thomas Tuchel seeks a versatile option on the right side of defence.

Contract Status and Transfer Speculation

With a contract running until 2029, decisions regarding Acheampong’s long-term future need to be addressed between now and next summer.

Transfer windows have frequently brought links with moves away from Stamford Bridge, though club sources have continually insisted he is untouchable.

That stance has sometimes surprised observers, particularly as Chelsea seriously explored moves for Dean Huijsen in the summer of 2025 and Jeremy Jacquet in January 2026, both of whom share similar attributes and are only a year older.

At one point during the summer, Chelsea had 10 senior centre-backs before finishing the window with six.

In a season without European football, genuine doubts existed regarding Acheampong’s playing time, leading to explored loan moves including a potential switch to Crystal Palace.

Palace ultimately signed Chelsea’s Axel Disasi on loan instead, constrained by Premier League rules allowing only one domestic loan from another top-flight club.

Despite being at Chelsea since joining the Under-8s, Acheampong has previously come close to departing. In 2023, he did not sign a professional contract on his 17th birthday, though the current ownership secured his future in January 2024.

Twelve months later, a contract dispute led former manager Enzo Maresca to describe it as a difficult situation, with the player temporarily withdrawn from selection before signing his current deal in December 2024.

Chelsea could face critical choices next summer when Acheampong, Colwill, and Fofana all enter the final two years of their contracts.

Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo were sold this summer upon reaching that same two-year threshold, following lessons learned from the 2022 takeover when Antonio Rudiger and Christensen departed on free transfers.

While Acheampong’s recent displays have elevated expectations around his future, no active discussions are underway for a new deal, and a previously floated seven-year contract remains undecided.

Representatives for the player remain cautious about rushing negotiations until there is definitive proof he will remain a regular starter at Stamford Bridge.

However, the first-team opportunities provided by Alonso offer the club its best chance yet to secure the long-term commitment of one of its most promising academy products.
