Pundit Paul Merson has expressed doubts regarding Arsenal’s upcoming Champions League fixture against Bayern Munich. He believes the Gunners have become overly cautious after being frightened by a recent defeat.
Frightened Approach After Brighton Defeat
According to comments made to Sky Sports by Paul Merson, as reported by Football365, Arsenal reverted to an ultra-cautious style following a 3-0 loss to Brighton before the international break. Merson stated that the defeat scared the team into returning to an efficient, defense-first machine rather than playing entertaining football.
Merson criticized their lack of attacking threat during a match against Nottingham Forest, noting that despite dominant possession, the team failed to create chances. He added that the current setup lacks wingers beating players, movement off the ball, and players running beyond the ball, contrasting it with the attacking style of past Arsene Wenger teams.
Doubts Over Champions League Prospects
Looking ahead to the European fixture, Merson stated, as reported by Football365, that he cannot see how Mikel Arteta’s side can defeat the Bundesliga giants. He suggested that Bayern Munich should open up the game because Arsenal lack the capacity to outscore top European opponents.
Merson also questioned whether players like Kai Havertz possess the X-factor needed to worry elite central defenders in the Champions League. Despite his concerns in Europe, Merson still backs Arsenal to win the Premier League title because their defensive setup means they typically only need one goal to win a match.
