The Columbus Crew prepare to host the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final on Wednesday against St. Louis City SC, presenting a vital chance to salvage their season. Despite holding nine trophies in their history, the club has experienced significant roster shifts since their last title win, the 2024 Leagues Cup.
Chasing a Trophy and Overcoming Struggles
Forward Josef Martinez joined the Crew during the summer following a difficult stint with Club Tijuana in Liga MX. Although his move from CF Montreal did not pan out as initially hoped, Martinez expressed gratitude for joining the Crew, where he has regained full fitness and earned an opportunity to compete for silverware.
Martinez previously won the Open Cup with Atlanta United in 2018, a historic season where he also secured the Golden Boot, MLS Cup, and MVP awards. Although the 33-year-old Venezuelan has played for five different teams over the past three years, he remains confident in his ability to contribute both on and off the pitch for the Crew as they chase their first trophy post-Wilfried Nancy.
“We have to recognize that this is an opportunity to turn on the little bit of a struggle season; this is the opportunity to win something,” Martinez stated, adding that reaching a final is a special occasion.
Embracing Leadership and Pressure
As an experienced veteran who earned the moniker “El Rey” during his time in Atlanta, Martinez embraces the responsibility of setting an example for his teammates alongside Mendez. Currently sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference with dwindling playoff hopes, the Crew view Wednesday’s match as a defining moment for their campaign.
Opponents St. Louis City SC enter the fixture unbeaten in 22 consecutive games and seeking the first final victory in their club’s history. According to Martinez, both squads will feel the pressure, meaning the team that commits fewer mistakes will secure the victory.
“We’re professional,” Martinez explained. “We know what the game is; we know what the situation is right now. And we know that is important. We have to go there and play soccer and fight.”
The decisive U.S. Open Cup final kicks off at 8:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio, with live coverage available on CBS Sports Network and Paramount+.
