Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has expressed his belief that Manchester United defender Leny Yoro would be thriving if he played for Liverpool instead. Yoro joined Manchester United during the 2024 summer transfer window for approximately £52 million amidst interest from multiple European clubs.
Petit Criticizes Manchester United’s Instability
Speaking to Betfred, as reported by Football365, Petit compared Yoro’s situation to other players and highlighted the instability at Old Trafford. The former midfielder noted that Yoro has dealt with injuries and has been deployed in various positions, including both right-back and centre-back.
Petit questioned whether it is fair to expect the young defender to elevate his performance when teammates are also struggling. He pointed to a lack of leadership within the squad and specifically criticized the body language of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, stating that he has disliked it across this season and the previous one.
Petit stated that Yoro cannot solve the club’s problems single-handedly and suggested that the defender’s career trajectory would look very different in a more stable environment like Liverpool’s.
Rio Ferdinand Backs Yoro to Keep His Place
Following a strong performance against Leeds United, club legend Rio Ferdinand expressed his support for the defender on his YouTube channel, arguing that the 20-year-old now needs a consistent run in the starting lineup.
Ferdinand praised Yoro’s defensive work, particularly during the first half against Leeds, describing his defending at the back post as top drawer. He added that the player appears to be growing in confidence and looks stronger with every appearance.
Ferdinand concluded that regardless of returning players, Yoro must remain in the team to prove his worth following solid outings in Madrid and impressive displays for the French national team.
