Van Dijk Praises Ngumoha After Liverpool Comeback Win

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has praised teenager Rio Ngumoha following an impressive performance in their Champions League match against Villarreal. The Reds battled back from a two-goal deficit to secure a 4-3 victory at Anfield on Tuesday evening, with Ngumoha contributing two assists.

Liverpool’s Comeback Victory

Villarreal stunned the hosts early on, building a two-goal cushion through strikes from Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona within the first half-hour. Liverpool responded before the break, pulling level through goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Ronald Araujo.

The hosts seized control after halftime, scoring twice before the 70th minute to take a comfortable lead. Mac Allister completed his brace with the first, followed by a cool finish from Florian Wirtz. Although Tani Oluwaseyi scored for Villarreal with three minutes remaining, it served only as a consolation.

The comeback highlighted the performance of 18-year-old Ngumoha, who operated out of position on the less familiar right wing.

Van Dijk Hails Ngumoha and Reflects on His Own Error

Speaking after the game, as reported by Football365, Van Dijk lauded the young winger for his constant threat and ability to absorb advice from senior squad members. Van Dijk stated, “He’s pretty electric at times and he showed it again. He was a complete threat constantly, and their defender had a tough time.”

Van Dijk also highlighted the mentorship within the squad, pointing to Cody Gakpo and noting how beneficial it was for Ngumoha to work alongside Mohamed Salah previously. He added, “I think he has shown it this season, but there is still much more to come.”

However, the Dutch defender was critical of his own performance after committing a serious mistake in the fourth minute that allowed Mikautadze to open the scoring for Villarreal by intercepting a misjudged headed back-pass.

Reflecting on his mistake, Van Dijk told Football365, “It was a terrible start. I think the saying is you fight an uphill battle and as a defender it is pretty difficult to come back from it. I tried, but it was a bad day at the office personally, but we did it together with 11 players. We turned it around, and that’s the main thing.”

Liverpool continue their unbeaten run in the Champions League campaign as contract talks remain ongoing to secure Ngumoha’s long-term future at the club.
