Harry Kane produced an extraordinary performance that included taking a goal-kick, setting up a goal, and scoring a penalty during Bayern Munich’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal in the Champions League. The display further highlighted the 33-year-old forward’s credentials as a top contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award.
Unusual Goal-Kick and Key Contributions
With less than 25 minutes played in the match, the England captain demonstrated his tactical freedom under Bayern manager Vincent Kompany by placing the ball down and launching an 80-yard goal-kick up the pitch. Speaking to BBC Sport, former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha noted that even experienced goalkeeper Manuel Neuer stepped aside to let Kane restart play, reflecting the immense trust the striker enjoys within the squad.
Kane was vital in shaping the match after Eberechi Eze put Arsenal ahead. The former Tottenham Hotspur striker delivered a curling pass around Jurrien Timber to set up Alphonso Davies for Bayern’s equalizer. In the second half, Kane converted a penalty to put the hosts ahead, taking his career tally to 16 goals against Arsenal, before Declan Rice struck late to earn a draw for the English side.
Historical Record and Ballon d’Or Standing
By scoring against Arsenal, Kane became only the second player in Champions League history to score in 10 consecutive matches. The only other player to achieve this mark was five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored in 11 consecutive fixtures for Real Madrid between June 2017 and April 2018. Kane has now registered 156 goals in 158 appearances for Bayern Munich since joining the club in 2023.
Kane was named on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or in September, alongside fellow contenders such as Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and current holder Ousmane Dembele of Paris Saint-Germain. Should Kane win the award—decided by an international jury of 100 journalists and set to be announced in London on Monday—he would become the first Englishman to do so since Michael Owen in 2001.
Praising his international teammate, Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice told TNT Sports: “He is the clear winner. His numbers speak for themselves. The year he has had has been remarkable.” Rice added that Kane is “ridiculous, such a good player” and noted, “When you play with him, you realise how good he is, and when you play against him, you see how much of a pain it is.”
Addressing the upcoming ceremony, Kane acknowledged that the decision is already out of his hands. “It would be amazing to win,” said Kane. “The voting closed a long time ago so there’s nothing I can do, just wait and see what happens.”
