Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed deep concern after winger Bukayo Saka suffered a serious quadriceps injury during the Gunners’ 2-2 Champions League draw against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. The 25-year-old was forced off just ten minutes into the match after attempting a pass with no opposing players around him.
Growing Injury Concerns for Key Forward
Saka pulled up in clear distress and signaled to the bench before being replaced by Eberechi Eze, who went on to score the opening goal of the match. Speaking after the game, Arteta stated that the medical team was worried, noting that a player coming off with sharp pain is never good news while the club awaits further medical assessments.
The setback follows a string of physical issues for Saka, who has registered four goals in 11 appearances across all competitions this season. Last term, an Achilles injury in March sidelined him for seven matches and an international break before he returned to help Arsenal win their first Premier League title in 22 years. The forward also underwent surgery for a hamstring injury in December 2024 that kept him out for 101 days, though he still made 49 appearances overall during the title-winning campaign.
Squad Depth Tested Ahead of Upcoming Fixtures
Despite losing Saka early, Arsenal put in a strong display in Germany and earned a point thanks to a late equalizer from Declan Rice. Speaking on BBC’s Champions League Match of the Day, analyst Nedum Onuoha observed that while losing Saka’s quality is a blow, Arsenal’s squad construction leaves them well-prepared to cope. Following the substitution, Noni Madueke shifted to the right flank while Eze filled in on the left.
Arsenal’s summer transfer activity has provided additional depth in wide areas. Alongside Madueke and Eze, the squad features summer signing Christos Tzolis, who is currently recovering from a hamstring issue, as well as 16-year-old academy prospect Max Dowman. Arteta praised the performance of his bench players after the match, highlighting Eze’s work rate off the ball and the energy the substitutes brought to secure a result in Munich.
