Unai Emery Leads Manchester United Managerial Shortlist

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is reportedly leading a six-man INEOS shortlist to succeed Michael Carrick at Manchester United following a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como. The heavy loss in Italy marked Manchester United’s fifth defeat in 11 matches across all competitions this season, with goals from Nico Paz, Anastasios Douvikas, and Jacobo Ramón securing the victory for Cesc Fabregas’ side.

Dressing Room Tensions and Tactical Criticism

The defeat exposed underlying tensions at Old Trafford, coming just a week after Lisandro Martinez criticized technical director Jason Wilcox regarding summer transfer activity. Following the match, captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the team’s tactical approach under Carrick.

Fernandes stated in his post-match press conference that the coaching staff chose not to press man-to-man, which left space behind the defense. When asked if the manager got the tactics wrong, Fernandes said, “That’s on the manager and staff to see, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable.” He added that giving a team like Como too much time and space in the middle allows them to cause problems out wide.

After acknowledging that the team’s performance was unacceptable, Carrick rejected Fernandes’ tactical assessment during his own press conference and criticized his players for a lack of effort in running.

Managerial Candidates to Succeed Carrick

As pressure mounts on the club legend, reports indicate that INEOS has compiled a six-man list of potential replacements. According to Football365 citing reporting from The I Paper, Unai Emery is considered the leading candidate and a dream choice for the Old Trafford hierarchy. Decision-makers at the club are reportedly impressed by his ability to rebuild a squad while navigating financial fair play regulations.

Sources close to Emery, who has managed Aston Villa since 2022, suggest he remains fully committed to Villa Park where he holds significant influence, though Manchester United would register strong interest should Carrick depart.

Other names featured on the INEOS shortlist include Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, and former Manchester United coach Kieran McKenna, who left Ipswich Town during the summer. Former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann is also understood to have admirers within the club.
