Lahm Questions Guardiola’s Man City Legacy Over Rule Breaches

Former Bayern Munich star Philipp Lahm has questioned Pep Guardiola’s legacy at Manchester City following a guilty verdict for numerous Premier League rule breaches. An independent commission recently found the club guilty of breaking 114 league rules, revealing they utilized fraudulent sponsorship agreements to inflate earnings by approximately £900 million between 2009 and 2018.

Appeal and Potential Sanctions

Manchester City have appealed the verdict, maintaining their innocence and stating they possess undeniable proof that the sponsorship money originated from the Abu Dhabi government rather than their owners. The original three-man panel reviewed this defense and determined the explanation was manufactured long after the fact to hide a disguised funding scheme, though City look to a new panel for a different outcome.

Potential sanctions range from financial penalties, transfer bans, and point deductions to removal from the Premier League and stripping of titles. Additionally, Independent Football Regulator Chair David Kogan stated on a podcast that owners could be forced out, noting the regulator holds absolute power to remove an owner if a club is not run with fitness, fairness, or propriety.

Lahm’s Assessment

Guardiola recently returned to the Etihad Stadium for a Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain. However, Lahm—whom Guardiola once labeled the most intelligent player he ever coached—expressed doubts regarding the manager’s achievements if the verdict is upheld on appeal.

Writing in his column for The Guardian, Lahm noted that City historically avoided signing the most obvious superstars, pointing out that players like Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Ilkay Gündogan, and Gianluigi Donnarumma developed into world-class talents after arriving with varying career questions. Lahm added that Erling Haaland in 2022 was the first target City pursued who was also wanted by Bayern Munich, observing that the club largely operated similarly to other top European teams externally, while raising questions about the value of on-field success achieved alongside rule violations.
