Arteta Defends Arsenal Style Against Minority Critics

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has dismissed suggestions that his side’s tactical approach is unappealing, asserting that scrutiny over their performances is coming from only a “very small minority” of observers.

The Gunners have collected 10 victories from their opening 11 fixtures in all competitions this term, though they have encountered challenges when trying to penetrate stubborn, deep-lying defensive setups. On Sunday, Arteta’s side required an 80th-minute winner from substitute Noni Madueke to secure a narrow result against Nottingham Forest, bringing their league tally to 11 goals in seven matches.

Contrasting Numbers and Tactical Adjustments

Arsenal secured the Premier League title last season with the division’s tightest defensive record and the highest number of set-piece goals. This season presents a different picture, with the squad yet to convert a single dead-ball opportunity in any competition.

When questioned about the external conversation regarding their style of play, Arteta maintained that public perception has largely been positive.

“I don’t have that impression because I heard that the style was incredible. We have scored so many goals, we have more possession, more shots, different players participating, no goals on set-pieces,” Arteta said. “So the story is completely different to last year. I think we are talking about a very small minority [criticising the team]. I think the other ones, they know. I think they have enjoyed a lot the way we have played and dominated games this year. And I think we have proven that.”

The Spanish coach conceded, however, that breaking through compact opposition remains an area requiring refinement.

“The low block demands a different kind of game to the high block. A team that is constantly putting the ball in the last line. It’s different,” Arteta explained, adding that his squad could have handled Sunday’s challenge better and must openly acknowledge the need for improvement.

Raya Backs Results Over Perceptions

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya also rejected the notion that the players are frustrated by outside opinions, pointing directly to their recent form.

“People have their own opinions. We have our own opinion. At the end of the day, we have lost one game in 11 this season and if you call that boring or irritating, I don’t know what to say,” Raya said. “We enjoy playing football. We enjoy going out there every single day to win football matches, and that’s the most important thing.”

Arsenal turn their attention to continental competition on Wednesday, when they face Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
