Carragher Blasts Bruno Fernandes for Killing Man Utd

Jamie Carragher has criticized Bruno Fernandes for his post-match comments following Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League. The Serie A side secured the victory at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium through two goals from Nico Paz alongside strikes from Anastasios Douvikas and Jacobo Ramón, managed by Cesc Fabregas.

Fernandes and Carrick Trade Blame After Defeat

Following the heavy loss, Fernandes criticized the tactical approach of manager Michael Carrick and his staff. Fernandes stated that the decision not to press man-to-man created space behind the team, adding that players sometimes need to be braver under pressure. When asked if Carrick got his tactics wrong, Fernandes replied that the decision belonged to the manager and staff, noting that Como’s centre-back was able to mark him in his own half.

Carrick responded in his press conference by calling Fernandes’ assessment inaccurate and turning his focus onto the players’ lack of effort. Carrick explained that the team did attempt a half-pressed man-to-man approach in the second half but conceded a goal from it. He emphasized that regardless of the system or tactics used, a team cannot win if players do not run forward and backward.

Carragher Rips Into Fernandes on CBS Sports

Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher delivered a strong critique of Fernandes, labeling his public comments a disgrace. As reported by Football365, Carragher argued that Fernandes reacted defensively because he was substituted and embarrassed during the match. He claimed that Fernandes has historically prevented Manchester United from pressing effectively because his running style mimics a schoolyard child for the fans rather than coordinated team pressure.

Carragher recalled that Lisandro Martinez was previously out of order for calling out technical director Jason Wilcox following a transfer window dispute. He acknowledged that Fernandes won player of the year last season under Carrick’s management, but questioned his overall attitude and contribution to the team’s collective structure.

Calls for Managerial Change at Old Trafford

The defeat marked the fifth loss in 11 matches for Carrick’s side this season. Carragher noted that a managerial change is now necessary for a club of Manchester United’s stature, pointing out that the club has gone through numerous managers with Fernandes in the squad, indicating deeper structural issues.

At the same time, Carragher defended Carrick’s accomplishments from the previous season, crediting him with securing Champions League qualification and bringing vital financial revenue to the club. He expressed satisfaction that Carrick addressed the players’ work rate publicly and substituted Fernandes during the match.
