Champions League Yellow Card Suspension Rules Explained

Champions League Yellow Card Suspension Rules Explained

Players participating in the Champions League face a one-match suspension upon accumulating four yellow cards. BBC Sport reports that this disciplinary framework spans from the beginning of the league phase through the conclusion of the quarter-finals.

Suspension Thresholds and Reset Rules

Following the quarter-final stage, all accumulated yellow cards are completely wiped out, ensuring players cannot miss matches due to accumulated cautions in the latter rounds. Identical suspension regulations are enforced across both the Europa League and the Conference League.

Beyond the initial four-card threshold, players face additional one-match suspensions upon reaching six, eight, or ten yellow cards. This means a suspension is triggered every time a player hits an even number of bookings above four.

Current Booking Standings

Across the opening two rounds of the Champions League, five individuals collected two yellow cards each. As a result, Armando Obispo and Serginio Dest of PSV Eindhoven, Inter Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu, Club Brugge player Jan Virgili, and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Marlon Gomes enter the third round of fixtures two cautions away from a mandatory one-match ban.
