Emery Praises Garnacho and Barkley After Aston Villa Win

Unai Emery praised Alejandro Garnacho for delivering his finest 20 minutes for Aston Villa and lauded a resurgent teammate following a 3-1 victory over Viking on Wednesday. The win marked Aston Villa’s astonishing 12th consecutive home victory in European competition.

Match Performance and Team Reaction

Ross Barkley and Emiliano Buendia scored for the Villans, alongside an own goal forced by Alysson during the stellar performance by the young Brazilian. Emery expressed delight with how his squad handled the fixture.

“We are delighted with how we are responding to our demands and respecting the Champions League and our opponents,” Emery stated in his post-match press conference.

Emery noted that his team played a serious, good match both collectively and tactically, following their set plan while exploiting individual qualities. He added that players took steps forward with their confidence and tactical understanding.

Garnacho and Young Talent Progress

Garnacho has faced limited playing time since transferring from Chelsea in the summer, sparking speculation about a difficult campaign similar to Harvey Elliott’s previous season at Villa Park. However, international break reports indicated the forward is recovering his form.

When questioned about the standout performances of Alysson and Ibrahim Mbaye, Emery specifically highlighted Garnacho’s impact after coming off the bench. “They are exploiting their quality,” Emery explained, emphasizing the importance of team structure and confidence.

“Garnacho played 20 minutes and these were his best minutes with us. It is positive,” Emery said.

Ross Barkley’s Resurgence

Barkley found the net again after contributing two goals and an assist in the 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahce the previous week. Emery revealed that he is constantly pushing the midfielder offensively.

“Firstly, as a person, he is a fantastic guy. Getting emotions together is important, and everyone needs to feel the same. Ross Barkley is a very good player with experience, and his career, I don’t know why, was going down after Chelsea. When we watched him at Luton, we thought, ‘Wow, what a player’,” Emery mentioned.

Emery concluded by expressing satisfaction with Barkley’s attitude, noting that the player remains respectful whether starting or benched, and confirmed high offensive demands for the experienced midfielder.
