Como has experienced a remarkable rise from Italy’s lower divisions to Serie A and qualification for the UEFA Champions League. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News, sporting director Carlalberto Ludi reflected on the club’s transformation, the pivotal role of head coach Cesc Fabregas, and an upcoming fixture against Manchester United.
Fabregas Driving Como’s Rapid Rise
Cesc Fabregas joined Como as a player in Serie B in 2022 before transitioning into coaching roles within the club’s academy and eventually taking charge of the senior team. Over four years, the Spaniard guided Como to their first Serie A promotion in 21 years and secured a historic Champions League qualification last season. According to Ludi, speaking to Sky Sports News, the former midfielder’s influence transformed the entire club culture and mentality.
Ludi praised the 39-year-old coach’s open-mindedness and continuous desire to learn and improve. He described the team’s playing style as a reflection of Fabregas himself, noting that courage, intelligence, and talent define both the head coach and the squad he has built.
A Reunion with Bruno Fernandes
The fixture against Manchester United also brings an unexpected reunion between Ludi and United captain Bruno Fernandes. The pair previously played together at Novara when Fernandes was 17 years old, with Ludi serving as team captain as the teenager started his professional career. Ludi told Sky Sports News that he initially had to guide the young midfielder in the professional dressing room, describing him as a phenomenal, humble, and open-minded person.
Ludi expressed excitement about meeting his former teammate again in the Champions League, noting that he always celebrated Fernandes’ career progression. He added that catching up after the match would be fantastic, describing the midfielder as one of the best people he has ever met.
Welcoming Manchester United to Como
Hosting Manchester United marks another major milestone in a journey that includes securing promotion to Serie A with a draw against Cosenza in May 2024. Ludi, who has worked with Como since 2019, admitted that the club’s rapid progress from having virtually nothing to playing in the Champions League feels incredible. He emphasized that the team aims to make their supporters proud and continue writing history as they prepare to face Michael Carrick’s side.
