Liverpool: Van Dijk mistake made worse by one thing, say pundits

Pundits Gabby Agbonlahor and Troy Deeney have criticized Virgil van Dijk following Liverpool’s 4-3 victory, highlighting the defender’s poor reaction to his own error and signs of mental fatigue.

Van Dijk’s Mistake and Reaction

Liverpool secured a comeback win after falling two goals behind, though the captain gifted Villarreal an early opening goal. In an attempt to head the ball back to his goalkeeper, Van Dijk directed it straight into the path of Georges Mikautadze, who scored past Alisson.

Admitting his mistake after the match, Van Dijk explained to reporters that he had a terrible start and described it as a bad day at the office personally. He added that he tried to recover, noting that football is played with 11 players and the team managed to turn the result around.

Agbonlahor stated on talkSPORT that while Van Dijk remains a very good defender with strong attributes, it was the lack of a reaction that troubled him. He noted that even if the defender could not stop the goal, a captain must react to his own mistake to set an example for the rest of the team.

Pundit Concerns and Comparisons

CBS Sports pundit Troy Deeney shared similar concerns, stating that the defender appeared mentally fatigued. Deeney noted that such errors are unusual for the Liverpool captain and pointed out that he also stepped in unnecessarily for the second conceded goal while looking frustrated.

Comparing the situation to the later career of Chelsea legend John Terry, Deeney explained that every footballer eventually reaches that stage. He observed that while Van Dijk possesses great athletic ability, his speed is decreasing and he coaches his teammates less than Terry did.
