Liverpool Hold Back New Contract for Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool are currently in no hurry to open contract negotiations with Alexis Mac Allister, despite the midfielder’s outstanding form making him one of the team’s key players this season.

Key Role in Champions League Turnaround

Reporting for The Telegraph, football correspondent Dominic King wrote that the 27-year-old Argentine has moved from the “brink of [an] exit” to becoming a central figure in Liverpool’s midfield. Mac Allister demonstrated his influence on Tuesday evening, scoring two goals to help secure a 4-3 comeback victory over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League.

Highlighting his impact on the match, King wrote that “Mac Allister (along with Rio Ngumoha) was the catalyst for a marvellous turnaround, confirming he is the linchpin in this midfield.” The double against Villarreal extended Mac Allister’s impressive European record at Anfield, where all eight of his Champions League goals for the club have been scored, including a match-winner against Real Madrid last season.

Response to Contract Disappointment

Mac Allister’s recent resurgence follows a difficult campaign last term, when a drop in performance coincided with Liverpool finishing fifth in the Premier League table. During that period, fellow midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai were handed new deals, while Mac Allister revealed in September that he was “very sad” after being left out of contract extension discussions.

King noted that Mac Allister used that setback as motivation, joining Jérémy Jacquet as one of the club’s most consistent players this autumn, alongside Cody Gakpo before his injury. While there would have been little resistance to selling the midfielder at the end of last season to generate transfer revenue, his current form for manager Andoni Iraola has made a potential departure far less likely.

Current Deal and Transfer Interest

The Argentine international joined Liverpool for £35 million in June 2023 on a contract running until June 2028, by which time he will be 29 years old. Addressing the club’s stance, King stated that “Liverpool are not in any rush to start talking about new contracts with Mac Allister, who they were able to sign on a cut-price £35m deal in June 2023, but if he keeps playing with this zip, he can change that situation too.”

As reported by Football365, clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester City, and Real Madrid have been linked with Mac Allister, though Liverpool remain in a firm position regarding his future as long as he maintains his high level of performance.
