Paris Saint-Germain star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will undergo surgery after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in a 4-2 victory against Barcelona on Tuesday, according to the club.
Injury Details and Recovery Outlook
Kvaratskhelia sustained the injury in the 59th minute at the Parc des Princes following a challenge from Xavi Espart. He went down heavily on his right leg and was carried off the pitch. While Paris Saint-Germain announced that the operation will happen in the coming days, no specific timeline has been provided for his return, though an absence of at least nine months is typical for such a knee ligament injury. This lengthy recovery creates doubts about whether he will feature again this campaign or regain the stellar form that helped the club secure consecutive Champions League titles.
In addition to Kvaratskhelia, Paris Saint-Germain will miss forward Ousmane Dembele and center back Marquinhos for a few weeks due to injuries picked up in the same match. Luis Enrique faces a major challenge in covering these absences, particularly with Kvaratskhelia.
Replacements and Squad Depth
Paris Saint-Germain revamped their attacking options during the summer transfer window, generating over $350 million from the sales of Goncalo Ramos, Lee Kang-in, Randal Kolo Muani, Bradley Barcola, and Ibrahim Mbaye. They reinvested around $50 million each to bring in Maghnes Akliouche, Ferran Torres, and Mika Godts.
Maghnes Akliouche emerges as the primary candidate to fill the void, having previously started ahead of Kvaratskhelia against Manchester City. Luis Enrique has lauded the 24-year-old former Monaco player for his positional versatility across the frontline, which suits Paris Saint-Germain’s fluid attacking system alongside Dembele and Desire Doue. Ferran Torres offers another viable alternative, having scored seven goals this term while bringing prior experience as a winger from his time at Valencia and Manchester City. Meanwhile, Mika Godts has had limited playing time, with his only start arriving against Le Mans earlier in the month.
Luis Enrique now faces the difficult task of managing player minutes across competitions. The club’s recent European success relied heavily on resting key players during Ligue 1 matches to keep them fit for critical Champions League fixtures. With Kvaratskhelia sidelined and Dembele requiring careful management, maintaining a fresh and effective attack will prove more challenging for the French champions.
