Rio Ngumoha has made the right decision by committing to Liverpool rather than moving to Arsenal, as manager Mikel Arteta’s tactical system risks neutralizing young attacking talent. As reported by Football365, the 18-year-oid is currently in active talks over a new long-term contract with Liverpool.
Contract Talks and Growing Role
Following strong interest from Bayern Munich and Arsenal, Ngumoha has found a supportive environment under manager Andoni Iraola, making five starts and playing 444 minutes this season. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that active conversations are ongoing between the player and Liverpool regarding a new deal, with reports indicating the club is close to securing his future.
Speaking about Iraola’s influence after strong substitute performances against Brentford and Villarreal, Ngumoha told Football365, “He wants me to take on one-v-one duels; he wants me to be a threatening player. I am just taking on what he is saying and looking to improve. I am enjoying working with him and enjoying improving.” He also noted his mindset during matches, stating, “Whenever I get the ball and there’s an opportunity to go one-v-one or two-v-one, I believe in myself. I’ll just keep going and be ruthless.”
The Dangers of Arsenal Under Arteta
A move to Arsenal could have stalled the teenager’s development, as evidenced by the struggles of current Gunners attackers. Bukayo Saka has seen his form dip significantly due to over-playing and injuries, transforming from an unstoppable winger into a shadow of his former self under a manager who makes it difficult for forwards to thrive. Similarly, £70m summer 2025 signing Eberechi Eze has struggled for regular first-team opportunities, frequently being played out of position on the left wing.
While Arteta’s side may secure silverware, forwards risk losing their joy and creative freedom in his rigid system. By staying at Liverpool under Iraola, Ngumoha has avoided a stifling environment and positioned himself to enhance his natural abilities.
