Bruno Guimarães admitted he suffered sleepless nights and shed tears before completing his £75m transfer from Newcastle United to Arsenal. The Brazil midfielder faced a difficult goodbye at St James’ Park after a tumultuous summer, but he is now aiming to replicate the deep bond he had with supporters at his new club.
Leaving Newcastle and Joining Arsenal
Reflecting on his departure, Guimarães explained that telling manager Eddie Howe, the club owners, and his teammates was extremely difficult because of the strong connection he built after joining in January 2022. He noted that the team was breaking up with several departures, including Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, alongside Howe’s exit. Despite losing sleep and crying alongside his former teammates during farewells, Guimarães felt he needed a fresh challenge to compete regularly for top honours.
According to Football | The Guardian, Arsenal targeted the midfielder to provide a different dimension for unlocking defences, combining his trademark work rate with competitive aggression. The signing has paid early dividends, with Guimarães scoring his first Arsenal goal in a September victory at Sunderland, followed by a winning goal against Leeds in the Premier League. He also nearly scored in a recent 2-2 Champions League draw against Bayern Munich, only to be denied by an incredible save from Manuel Neuer.
Adapting to Arteta and Midfield Partnerships
Guimarães has quickly integrated into Arsenal’s midfield, developing a fluid partnership alongside Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard under manager Mikel Arteta. He noted that Arteta continually searches for the optimal balance by utilizing both him and Rice in different central roles depending on the tactical needs of the match.
Having previously engaged in fierce on-field battles with Rice when the Englishman played for West Ham, Guimarães shared that Rice messaged him upon his arrival in north London with a lighthearted remark about becoming friends rather than opponents. Guimarães also praised Neuer as one of the world’s top goalkeepers following the veteran’s miraculous stop against his header in Munich.
The midfielder praised the relentless winning mentality instilled by Arteta, noting that the squad was disappointed with a draw in Germany because of their constant drive for victory. Arsenal’s next fixture sees them host Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.
