Sheffield Wednesday Forward Jamal Lowe Suffers Racial Abuse Online

Sheffield Wednesday forward Jamal Lowe has revealed that his wife received a social media message containing racial abuse directed at him. The offensive comment appeared repeatedly on his partner’s Instagram photographs following the 32-year-old Jamaica international’s red card during a 2-0 defeat against Notts County on Tuesday.

Club and Player Response

The League One club issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the incident, stating that racism is abhorrent, has no place in football or society, and that they condemn the abuse in the strongest possible terms. Lowe addressed the incident on his own Instagram account, writing that bad performances do not justify racial abuse from supporters and calling on parents to educate their children and confront family members who exhibit such behaviour.

“To think we’re only one bad result away from being called a monkey is actually insane,” Lowe posted, adding that the phenomenon occurs too frequently and demanding improvement.

Police Investigation and Previous Incidents

The UK Policing Football Unit confirmed to BBC Sport that an investigation into the matter is currently underway. In a statement, the unit emphasized that racial abuse online or in person is unacceptable and warned individuals hiding behind keyboards that officers will work to identify perpetrators and bring them to justice.

This marks the second instance this year involving racist abuse directed at a Sheffield Wednesday player following a match. An unidentified player received similar messages in April after a draw against Leicester, leading the club to highlight that multiple incidents have affected players, staff, and their families this season.

The club noted that these occurrences reinforce the importance of collective action, arriving shortly after the team participated in the English Football League’s Together Against Racism campaign. Previously in 2024, the club received a £12,500 fine and a supporter received a five-year ban after Coventry player Kasey Palmer faced a racist gesture during a match.
