Chelsea Lead Race for Trent Alexander-Arnold Under Alonso

Chelsea Lead Race for Trent Alexander-Arnold Under Alonso

Chelsea have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold after Xabi Alonso gave his approval for the transfer, according to recent reports.

Alexander-Arnold Struggles in Madrid

Alexander-Arnold initially made the switch to Spain with the ambition of winning the Ballon d’Or, but his situation at Real Madrid has fallen short of expectations. The 28-year-old joined during a period where Los Blancos have struggled to match domestic rivals Barcelona, while European campaigns have offered little relief.

On a personal level, the defender has seen his playing time severely limited. Although Real Madrid brought in Denzel Dumfries during the summer transfer window, manager Jose Mourinho frequently deploys midfielder Federico Valverde in the right-back position instead, leaving Alexander-Arnold on the fringes of the squad.

A report published on October 19 by TEAMtalk indicated that both the player and the club are open to parting ways. Alexander-Arnold’s frustration has grown due to a lack of minutes, remaining an unused substitute during a recent Champions League fixture against RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

While Real Madrid are not actively forcing the defender out, they are prepared to accept a suitable bid. Having signed him for €10 million when he had only a month remaining on his Liverpool contract, the Spanish club stands to make a significant profit on a player who is currently getting little game time.

Chelsea Eyeing Stamford Bridge Switch

Reporter Graeme Bailey previously revealed that four English clubs are monitoring the situation: Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester City. However, according to an update from journalist Simon Phillips, a transfer to Stamford Bridge appears the most probable outcome.

Phillips reported that Alonso is eager to reunite with Alexander-Arnold and has effectively greenlit the pursuit. This development follows recent news that Chelsea club captain Reece James underwent knee surgery and faces approximately three months on the sidelines.

At present, alternative right-sided options at Stamford Bridge include the young and inexperienced Marco Palestra, alongside winger Pedro Neto, who has frequently filled in at right wing-back this season. Meanwhile, Malo Gusto remains part of the squad, though he continues to attract interest from Alexander-Arnold’s former club, Liverpool.

Liverpool previously attempted to secure Gusto on loan during the summer transfer deadline day, but walked away when Chelsea demanded a permanent transfer and slapped a £75m valuation on the player. With Ronald Araujo only currently at Anfield on a temporary basis and Jeremie Frimpong struggling for form, Liverpool plan to strengthen their right-back options in 2027.

According to journalist Dean Jones, the Merseyside club could revive their pursuit of Gusto in January, with his previous £75m asking price now lowered.
