Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is open to taking over at Manchester United should the club decide to dismiss current boss Michael Carrick, according to a report from journalist Florian Plettenberg.
Nagelsmann’s Availability and Interest
Carrick is facing intense pressure at Old Trafford following a difficult start to the season that has yielded only two victories in eleven matches. The club legend’s position became even more precarious after a 4-1 defeat against Como in the Champions League, leaving him at risk of losing his job ahead of an upcoming fixture against AFC Bournemouth.
Nagelsmann emerged as a candidate for the position after stepping down from his role as Germany’s national team coach following the World Cup. Reporting on X, Florian Plettenberg stated that Nagelsmann is high on the club’s shortlist and remains immediately available for appointment. Plettenberg added that a transfer to the Premier League is conceivable for the German coach, though RB Leipzig are also monitoring his situation should things not work out with Martin Demichelis.
Other Contenders and Warnings
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler is also on Manchester United’s radar, but Plettenberg reported that his clear priority is finishing the current campaign with Brighton and securing a Champions League place under his contract running until 2029. While Hurzeler’s future could be open in the summer with top-level enquiries already circulating, other figures have urged caution regarding Old Trafford.
Germany legend Oliver Kahn issued a warning to Nagelsmann regarding the potential move, telling Sky Germany that taking the job carries substantial risk. Kahn noted that the coach lacks extensive experience at foreign clubs and pointed out that Manchester United and the Premier League have not been known for managerial stability in recent years, questioning whether the appointment would be the right next step.
