Former Man United chief John Murtough joins Birmingham City

Former Manchester United football director John Murtough has been appointed as the new director of football at Birmingham City. Murtough succeeds Craig Gardner, who departed St Andrew’s in June, and will officially start his new position on Monday following the Championship fixture against Cardiff City.

Career Background and New Responsibilities

Murtough, 55, spent 11 years at Old Trafford before leaving his role as football director in April 2024. His extensive career includes previous spells with Everton, Fulham, Coventry City, and the Premier League, while his most recent position was as director of global development at Serie A side Atalanta.

In an official statement, Birmingham announced that head coach Chris Davies will report directly to Murtough. The new director’s broad remit spans recruitment, performance data, and the player pathway from the academy into the senior squad. Additionally, Murtough will collaborate with Hope Powell to integrate the women’s team into the club’s overarching football strategy, as the Blues women currently sit 13th in the standings.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the project, Murtough stated that Birmingham is a great football club with brilliant supporters and enormous potential, adding that the ownership group demonstrates a clear long-term vision. Owners Knighthead Capital Management echoed this sentiment in a board statement, emphasizing their ambition to see the club compete at the highest level of English football and achieve sustained success.

Manchester United Tenure

Murtough started his professional journey as a sports scientist alongside David Moyes at Everton, eventually rising to head of performance prior to joining the Premier League in 2012 as head of elite performance. He moved to Manchester United in 2013, initially serving as head of football development before being promoted to football director in March 2020, taking charge of operations and strategy across all football functions.

During his time leading football operations, the club went through several managerial changes, overseeing the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, interim spells under Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick, and the appointment of Erik ten Hag before his own departure prior to Ten Hag’s exit in October 2024. High-profile player acquisitions during his tenure included Jadon Sancho, Antony, Rasmus Hojlund, and Mason Mount.

Club Ambitions and Analysis

As reported by BBC Radio WM’s Blues reporter Richard Wilford, the appointment signals clear ambition and brings high-level experience to the club. The search for a successor to Gardner took time following the former midfielder’s departure, a figure who had aided the recent ownership transition and recovery from relegation to League One.

Murtough steps in while the men’s team occupies fourth place in the Championship following three consecutive victories under Chris Davies, while the women’s side works to re-establish its standing in the WSL. The selection of Murtough is also expected to address summer concerns regarding the absence of senior football expertise bridging the gap between ownership and the coaching staff.
