Liverpool must address the mounting fatigue of captain Virgil van Dijk before his declining performances hurt the team. The Dutch defender admitted to a poor display in Tuesday night’s match against Villarreal, which included an early mistake that handed the visitors the lead.
Signs of Fatigue in the Captain
While Liverpool ultimately overcame their defensive lapses, Van Dijk’s performance raised concerns. As reported by Football365, the defender appeared physically and mentally exhausted during the match. His decision-making was sluggish, highlighted by a poorly executed header back to goalkeeper Alisson that gifted Georges Mikautadze a scoring opportunity. Van Dijk failed to react or recover after the error, and similar weariness was evident during Villarreal’s subsequent goals, showing an uncharacteristic reluctance to engage.
An Relentless Schedule
The 35-year-old defender has played every single minute in the Premier League and featured in every Champions League fixture this season, mirroring his workload from the previous campaign. Only five older outfield players have appeared in the Premier League this season, and none carry the burden of playing every minute like Van Dijk, aside from Pascal Gross and Adam Smith.
Unlike his peers who received a recent three-week break during the international fixture window, Van Dijk played every minute of four Nations League matches for the Netherlands to earn his 100th cap, following a summer where he also played every minute of their World Cup campaign. At the club level, the center-back has not missed a meaningful minute of Premier League action in over three years, with his last absence due to suspension occurring in September 2023.
Managing the Future
Given Van Dijk’s relentless drive, manager Andoni Iraola will likely need to step in and give his captain a rest, while also preparing for the future. The defender’s contract concludes next summer, and young French prospect Jeremy Jacquet is waiting in the wings. However, the 21-year-old cannot be supervised indefinitely during the current campaign.
Iraola does have alternative options within the squad, including Ronald Araujo, who is eager for a run at center-back, and the returning Joe Gomez, although Giovanni Leoni remains sidelined. While phasing out one of the club’s greatest defenders entirely is unnecessary, Van Dijk requires occasional breathers to maintain the imperious standards that defined his career.
