Rio Ngumoha has captured attention with his exceptional one-versus-one brilliance, delivering standout performances for Liverpool in both the Premier League and the Champions League. As highlighted in Sky Sports’ Radar column, the 18-year-old winger has combined blistering pace with staggering dribbling statistics that put him ahead of established stars.
Ngumoha’s Record-Breaking Dribbles and Impact
A substitute appearance last weekend saw Ngumoha change the game against Brentford after coming on for the injured Jeremie Frimpong. His late surge toward the penalty area resulted in Vitaly Janelt receiving a red card, helping Liverpool secure a vital victory. Just three days later, he produced an electrifying display against Villarreal at Anfield.
Aged 18 years and 52 days, Ngumoha became the third-youngest player in Champions League history to provide two assists in a single match, following Warren Zaire-Emery and Theo Walcott. Despite Villarreal doubling and tripling up on him, he clipped a diagonal cross to Ronald Araujo at the back post before setting up Alexis Mac Allister with a run to the byline.
Former Liverpool players praised the teenager, with Robbie Fowler calling it a statement performance, Daniel Sturridge describing his ability as God-given, and Jamie Carragher labelling him a future superstar as reported by Sky Sports. His nine successful dribbles against Villarreal brought his total to 18 in this season’s Champions League, putting him six clear of Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal.
Since his debut last season, Ngumoha has averaged 4.47 successful dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League, placing him ahead of Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku. Furthermore, his dribble success rate of 66 per cent surpasses any of the other 150 players who have attempted at least 35 dribbles in the same timeframe, compared to Doku’s 52 per cent and an overall average of 42 per cent.
Although he has played fewer minutes than most, his recent form shows him completing 19 out of 22 attempted dribbles across his last three appearances. This impact has come largely on the right wing, a position manager Andoni Iraola shifted him into following Mohamed Salah’s departure. While Iraola noted that he struggled defensively in the first half against Villarreal and needs to develop his left-footed shooting, he praised the youngster’s attitude.
Vuskovic Impresses for Brighton
Another teenager making waves in the Premier League is Luka Vuskovic, who will line up for Brighton against Liverpool. The 19-year-old centre-back, signed for £50 million from Spurs in July, has quickly adapted to the physical demands of English football under Fabian Hurzeler.
Hurzeler praised the defender’s physical strength, noting that only two players have won more aerial headers or made more headed clearances this season. Vuskovic’s defensive displays have contributed to four consecutive Premier League clean sheets for Brighton.
The defender has also made an impact in the opposition box, adding to an attack that has scored 23 goals in seven games, including eight from set-pieces. After scoring against Leeds in September, his header against Crystal Palace led to Jack Hinshelwood scoring the rebound. Vuskovic’s total of 13 shots is the highest of any defender in the Premier League, continuing the goalscoring form he showed during his loan spell at Hamburg.
The weekend’s action will see five Premier League matches broadcast live on Sky Sports, featuring clashes such as Chelsea against Tottenham, and Liverpool hosting Brighton.
