Bruno Fernandes to Keep Captaincy as Wayne Rooney Slams United

Bruno Fernandes will keep the Manchester United captaincy and face no disciplinary action following his post-match criticism of head coach Michael Carrick after a heavy Champions League defeat.

Captaincy and Club Reaction

Following a 4-1 loss against Como, the United skipper questioned Carrick’s tactical approach and stated that identifying and correcting issues was the responsibility of the coaching staff rather than the players. External observers viewed the remarks as a direct challenge to Carrick’s authority, following defender Lisandro Martinez’s recent criticism of director of football Jason Wilcox and summer recruitment.

Within Old Trafford, however, the club showed sympathy for the Portuguese midfielder regarding the circumstances. Fernandes completed 10 media interviews in Como despite being substituted midway through the second half. While officials felt some disappointment over specific comments, the club understood his frustration following one of the heaviest defeats in United’s European history.

Carrick will address the situation during his pre-match news conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth at Old Trafford, where it remains unconfirmed if Fernandes will be selected.

Wayne Rooney’s Criticism

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney expressed shock and deep concern over the team’s current situation and performance against Como. While questioning Carrick’s tactics is understandable, Rooney described the squad as “selfish” and compared them to infants following the controversial public statements from both Martinez and Fernandes.

Speaking on the United Stand podcast, Rooney stated that Martinez’s initial comments risked fracturing the dressing room and predicted similar behavior from other players avoiding accountability. He added that the squad lacks care for teammates, staff, and fans, instead deflecting blame when things do not suit them.

Rooney noted a significant drop in form for Fernandes compared to last season when he earned individual awards and broke the Premier League assist record. He urged the captain and his teammates to reflect on their own performances rather than shifting pressure onto others.

Future of the Manager

Rooney also called on the Manchester United board to provide clarity regarding Carrick’s future, advising the head coach to adopt a more aggressive stance to protect his position. Despite intense speculation about a dismissal amid the club’s worst run of form since the 2015-16 season, Carrick remains in charge for the weekend visit of Bournemouth.

Rooney reflected on his own managerial experiences to emphasize that Carrick must fight for himself because struggling players can undermine a manager’s tenure.
