Real Madrid’s Attacking Options During Vinicius Jr’s Ban

Real Madrid have never been short of attacking talent, but how best to bring that talent together has long been a subject of debate. Vinicius Jr’s four-match La Liga suspension has forced Jose Mourinho to rethink his forward line and explore alternative combinations.

Recent Tactical Shifts and Managerial Stance

In their 4-1 victory over Sevilla last weekend, Real produced some of their most impressive attacking football of the season by deploying a new-look front three. Kylian Mbappe led the line, with Endrick on the right, Yan Diomande on the left, and Jude Bellingham operating in midfield, delivering one of the team’s most complete attacking performances. Wednesday’s 4–1 Champions League victory over RB Leipzig showcased a different attacking set-up, with Mbappe leading the line alongside Vinicius and Arda Guler before Mourinho turned to his bench. Diomande replaced Vinicius in the 69th minute and made an immediate impact by scoring Real’s fourth goal with a spectacular volley, while Carlos Espi and Endrick were introduced late on. Mourinho has made it clear that no player is untouchable, with performances on the pitch ultimately determining who earns their place in the team, offering an intriguing glimpse into how the attack could evolve without Vinicius.

Diomande: The 150m Euro Player Showing His Value

Yan Diomande is an exciting prospect in Mourinho’s attacking puzzle and is finally beginning to show why Real invested so heavily in him after arriving from RB Leipzig following a 2025–26 campaign where he recorded 12 goals and nine assists. Although Mourinho took several weeks to give him opportunities, the winger has now started five of the past six matches, is joint-second for goal involvements with three goals and four assists, averages the most complete dribbles per 90 minutes, and ranks third for chances created in open play. Mourinho has praised his attitude, stating that he works hard, is humble, listens to instructions, and is developing well. Vinicius’ suspension now presents Diomande with a massive opportunity to shine on the left wing over three La Liga matches without direct competition from the Brazilian, starting with El Clasico against Barcelona on Sunday.

Endrick and Espi: Alternative Weapons

Endrick’s situation is more complicated following his return from a loan spell at Lyon in the second half of the 2025-26 campaign, but his performance against Roma offered a reminder of what he can bring with his acceleration, direct running, and versatility. The priority for the 20-year-old Brazilian must be to receive a clearly defined role and enough meaningful minutes to build his confidence. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Spanish striker Carlos Espi is making a name for himself as an effective impact player, scoring three goals in only 37 minutes across La Liga and the Champions League. Standing at 6ft 4in tall and arriving after an 11-goal campaign with Levante, Espi offers a different tactical option as a natural centre-forward who can occupy central defenders and attack crosses when Real need to chase a result.

If Espi continues to deliver in crucial moments, he could become far more than a substitute, providing Mourinho with a reliable game-changer when the pressure is highest.
