Carragher Slams Fernandes as Carrick Faces Pressure

Jamie Carragher has condemned Bruno Fernandes for publicly questioning Manchester United’s tactical choices following their 4-1 defeat to Como, while warning that the heavy defeat could lead to Michael Carrick losing his job. Fernandes raised doubts over the decision not to implement a man-to-man press, prompting Carrick to counter in his post-match press conference that teams cannot win without running back.

Carragher Scrutinizes Fernandes and Leadership Issues

The midfielder’s comments came shortly after Lisandro Martinez directed criticism at United’s upper management following a 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid. Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher criticized Fernandes’ conduct, calling his post-match reaction “a disgrace” and arguing that the midfielder achieved Player of the Year form last season largely because Carrick restored him to his best position.

Carragher argued that Fernandes reacted poorly because he was substituted and embarrassed during the match. He contended that the Portuguese international has disrupted United’s pressing structure for seasons by chasing the ball aimlessly, which gives supporters a false impression of hard work while damaging the team’s shape. Contrasting him with former captain Bryan Robson, Carragher pointed out that Robson remained loyal to teammates and managers during difficult periods rather than shifting blame publicly.

Carragher also praised Carrick for pushing back against the squad’s work rate, though he described United as compromised from top to bottom despite acknowledging Cesc Fabregas’s coaching achievements at Como.

Carrick’s Future and Divided Pundit Verdicts

While Carragher supported Carrick’s response to the players, he cautioned that the nature of the loss could result in serious consequences for the manager. Carragher noted that few observers expected United to win, but the scale of the collapse suggests Carrick could become the next coach dismissed by the club.

Taking a different view, Paul Merson suggested that replacing the manager would not solve United’s underlying issues. Comparing the club’s progress to snakes and ladders, Merson maintained that United must back Carrick through difficult spells rather than continuing a cycle of dismissals, stating that even bringing in an elite manager like Carlo Ancelotti would end in failure without fundamental patience.

Reviewing the aftermath of the match, Danyal Khan of Sky Sports News highlighted Carrick’s visibly dejected reaction at the final whistle, where he apologized to roughly 100 away supporters while bypassing his players. Khan compared the scene to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s final match against Watford in 2021, observing that Carrick notably abandoned his usual public defense of the squad’s effort after Fernandes challenged the tactical approach.
