Mateta Scores as Palace Draw 2-2 With 10-Man Besiktas

Crystal Palace were held to a 2-2 draw against 10-man Besiktas in Istanbul, despite Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring his first goal since last season’s UEFA Conference League final.

Eventful First Half at Vodafone Arena

The visitors controlled much of the early action in Turkey. Mateta thought he had opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he turned the ball into the net, but VAR intervened to rule the striker offside. Palace continued to create opportunities, with Wharton sending a cross just out of Mateta’s reach and Oh heading over from a corner kick. Mateta also had an effort saved by goalkeeper Nubel.

Despite Palace controlling play, Besiktas went ahead in first-half stoppage time. Wilfred Ndidi found the net with the host’s first shot on target to give Besiktas a 1-0 lead at the break.

Second-Half Turnaround and Late Red Card

Palace equalized six minutes into the second period. Anan Khalaili delivered a cutback for Pino to sweep home, and while the assistant referee initially raised the flag for offside, a VAR review overturned the decision and awarded the goal. Four minutes later, Mateta intercepted an underhit back pass, drove into the penalty area, and fired a powerful strike into the roof of the net to put Palace ahead.

Besiktas brought the match back level in the 73rd minute through substitute Junior Olaitan, who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner. The hosts were reduced to 10 men five minutes later when Umit Akdag was shown a straight red card for a two-footed challenge on Jorgen Strand Larsen. Larsen was forced off with an injury late on, but Besiktas held firm to secure the draw.

Pierre Sage Assesses Performance

Reflecting on the match in an interview with TNT, Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage felt his side deserved more from their performance despite acknowledging the atmosphere in Istanbul.

“It’s really intense, it’s crazy to play here, but I would have preferred to say it’s crazy to win here,” Sage said. “I am pleased (with the performance) but with the result a little bit frustrated for the lads.”

Sage noted that brief lapses in focus proved costly for his players during key moments of the game. “They gave a lot this evening and I think they deserve better, but we have a lack of concentration during one minute in the first half at the end, and it was the same thing when it was 2-1 for us,” he explained. The manager added that the display was an improvement from Sunday’s fixture as Palace look ahead to their upcoming match against Newcastle.
