Arsenal pursued Vinicius Junior aggressively during the summer transfer window when contract negotiations at Real Madrid stalled, according to the player’s agent. The Brazilian winger was facing a situation where he needed to sign a new deal or depart, as his previous contract was set to expire at the end of the season.
Agent Confirms Arsenal’s Strong Interest
Michael Yormark, president of Roc Nation Sports International, revealed to SportsBoom that Arsenal “rolled out the red carpet” and made the player feel deeply wanted. Yormark stated that Vinicius “seriously considered” the move to North London when a club of Arsenal’s stature showed such intense interest.
Ultimately, Vinicius chose to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu, signing a massive extension until 2032 worth £480,000 per week. Yormark explained that the player’s heart belongs in Madrid and expressed a desire to spend his entire professional career at the club. “It’s not often that an athlete gets to start their professional journey at one team, and end it there as well,” Yormark said, noting that Vinicius arrived at 18, is now 26, and hopes to remain at the club long-term.
Grant Veitch, a director at Roc Nation Sports International, added that other opportunities emerged during the summer. However, Veitch pointed to the player’s comfort level, established status as a star, and desire to build his reputation and win more titles as the key reasons he decided to stay.
Jose Mourinho Comments on Summer Exit
Vinicius has faced a challenging start to the current campaign and is currently serving a four-legged suspension for pulling an opponent’s hair. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho admitted ahead of a LaLiga fixture against Sevilla that he would have acted differently if faced with the same circumstances.
Mourinho stated to the media that he would have forced a departure last summer to a league, country, and stadiums where the player would receive more respect. However, Mourinho noted that Vinicius chose to renew his contract out of affection for the club, the city, and his status as a Madrid fan who believes conditions will improve.
