Main Contenders for the Manchester United Manager Job

As the future of Michael Carrick at Old Trafford faces ongoing debate, several high-profile managers emerge as potential candidates to succeed him in the Manchester United hot seat.

Julian Nagelsmann

The 39-year-old German brings an impressive resume having previously managed Bayern Munich and the German national team. Nagelsmann is known as an innovator who demands high standards and builds teams focused on relentless pressing. His tenure with Germany ended following a 2026 World Cup last-32 defeat by Paraguay, while at Bayern he won the Bundesliga in his single full season before being dismissed in March with the team sitting second and still in the Champions League.

Unai Emery

Widely recognized for his tactical acumen and success in the Europa League, the Aston Villa manager has proven his ability to work effectively on a budget. Securing Emery would depend on whether he views United’s potential as greater than Villa—who sit one point and one place ahead in the Premier League while excelling in the Champions League—and whether United would pay substantial compensation. While he prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation requiring a strong central striker, a trait United currently lacks, his pragmatic approach and counterattacking style would suit the existing squad.

Antonio Conte

Currently unattached after leaving Napoli in the summer, the Italian manager brings extensive Premier League experience from spells at Chelsea, where he won the 2017 title, and Tottenham. As a fierce competitor and disciplinarian, Conte would immediately enforce strict standards in the dressing room. However, his fiery temper has led to memorable media outbursts, such as questioning his suitability for the Tottenham job after losing to Burnley, and his preference for a three-at-the-back system could present personnel challenges similar to those faced by Ruben Amorim.

Kieran McKenna

Having previously worked in the United academy and served as a backroom staff member under José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær, McKenna holds strong ties to the club. He later achieved success by leading Ipswich to Premier League promotion before resigning in June to take a break from management. While internal links are often valued, the recent struggles of Solskjær and Carrick might make an external appointment more appealing, raising questions about whether he would cut his sabbatical short for such a precarious position.

Eddie Howe

As an English candidate with extensive Premier League experience and a record of guiding Newcastle to the Champions League, Howe represents a reliable option. Known as a relentless worker who utilizes a 4-3-3 system centered around wingers, he would require a strong central striker to step up. He typically works closely with his nephew Andy in senior roles, and like several other contenders, he would not require a compensation fee.

Fabian Hürzeler

The 33-year-old Brighton manager has built a strong reputation, guiding his side to third in the table with 23 goals scored across seven matches. This strong performance with a squad currently outperforming United means he may not be eager to leave his position. Although the scale of Manchester United remains attractive, taking over a struggling club mid-season presents significant challenges.
