Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 match against Lyon has been postponed by 24 hours to Monday as the French capital prepares for upcoming weekend protests. The game at the Parc des Princes was originally set for 19:45 GMT on Sunday but will now kick off at 20:30 on Monday.
Security Concerns and Protests
The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) confirmed the schedule change in a statement on Friday after French police banned the fixture from happening on its original date. French authorities are mounting a major security operation for demonstrations scheduled for Saturday. Approximately 550,000 individuals participated in demonstrations last Saturday against rising fuel prices, education standards, and living costs, following weeks of student protests. These marches occurred across major French cities, including Paris, with backing from unions and student organizations, and saw some instances of violence, looting, and destruction.
Security challenges are further increased by Sunday’s NFL fixture between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France, which also demands a substantial police presence. The American football game takes place in Saint-Denis, roughly 10 kilometers away from Place de la Bastille, where the demonstrations are anticipated to start. These disruptions have already impacted the domestic football calendar, prompting authorities to move Toulouse’s Ligue 1 home fixture against Troyes from Saturday to Sunday.
League Standings and Upcoming Events
Defending French and European champions Paris Saint-Germain sit second in the standings after seven matches, while Lyon top the table with 14 points, holding the lead over the holders on goal difference. The rescheduled fixture now falls on the same day as the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London. Injured PSG duo Ousmane Dembele, the 2025 winner, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia rank among the nominees for the prize.
