Southampton Director Reveals Spygate Summer Hardships

Southampton group technical director Johannes Spors revealed that the Spygate scandal created a challenging environment during summer preparations for the new campaign.

Uncertainty Over Tonda Eckert

In May, Southampton faced expulsion from the play-offs and a four-point deduction after confessing to spying on three rival teams throughout the Championship season. The situation cast doubt over the future of head coach Tonda Eckert while a Football Association investigation weighed whether to issue a personal ban that could have cost him his position.

Throughout the start of the season, the club and supporters remained uncertain if Eckert would face individual punishment. Those concerns ended in early October when the Football Association issued a £28,000 fine and handed him a six-week suspension, which was deferred until the conclusion of next season.

Rather than dismissing Eckert after his admissions in May, owner Dragan Solak and the board opted to give the German manager a second chance. Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Spors admitted that the situation created a unique and demanding period for squad planning.

“Of course, it did put me into a difficult position,” Spors stated to BBC Radio Solent, adding that it was a scenario few sporting directors ever encounter while shaping a team amidst such high levels of uncertainty.

Spors assumed his role as group technical director in February 2025 and was instrumental in bringing Eckert to the club, drawing on a career that includes six previous sporting director positions with clubs such as Standard Liege and Genoa.

Personal Support and Close Ties

Despite the ongoing investigation, Spors felt a strong duty to support Eckert personally through the turbulent summer months. He noted that Eckert is a young manager navigating immense pressure, transitioning to a new country, and facing rapid exposure at a high level.

“I just wanted to make sure that he’s OK as a human being,” Spors explained, noting that he offered his expertise and friendship while surrounding the coach with additional specialists.

The pair share a professional history spanning nearly a decade, having previously collaborated in Italy and with Red Bull. Spors helped guide various stages of Eckert’s career, including his pro license and subsequent arrival at St Mary’s.

Despite maintaining a close bond that involves daily communication and rigorous private discussions, Spors remained fully confident in his choice of manager. Southampton have since made a strong start to the Championship campaign, currently sitting eighth in the table after 11 matches and boasting the division’s best home record with five wins and one draw.
